It's a bit of both. The point about breaching 1 watertight compartment vs multiple is true. But also ships turn from the back and have massive momentum so turning hard without applying forward power means you're now just travelling sideways towards the iceberg.

One weird bit of trivia I've heard is that Stephen King's paperbacks tended to be better cared for by library borrowers than other authors. Librarians found they lasted for a lot more than the average number of lends before wearing out.

Yeah I 100% understand for many people the physicality of books is inextricably linked to the joy of reading, but surely the joy is the important part, not the object?

I can understand it with things like vinyl where the condition affects the actual content, but a tattered book is just as legible.

This is really insightful. Do you think the difficulty for most people is on the insight/understanding side, or just in allowing themselves to be vulnerable and take up space talking about it?

(I'm pretty good at interrogating my own emotions and terrible at sharing them but that might just be me)
