Historical note: The Pattern-1800 rifled carbine was the same carried by Bernard Cornwell's soldiers in his Sharpe's Rifles series. It was known as the "Baker" in Victorian times. This story is 1816, Regency Era. "Gaugers of excise" was period slang for the king's revenue police.
