Honestly one of my favorite decisions he's ever made

subtitles, or just pure visual storytelling?

I think this game will have been worth it in the long run.

Nintendo sucks as a company right now (and has for a long time) but that doesn't factor into my opinion of this game on its own -- but if they and Retro Studios can learn from how this game didn't reach its potential, and if they can come up with a new game in the next 5 years that does it right...

Stories are here to make us feel emotions and teach us about ourselves and the world around us. How can I feel anything or learn anything when the enemy I'm up against only shows up a couple times to remind me they're even in the game, and when they do they just point at me and we fight?

I think Sylux is a missed opportunity at this point. I beat Metroid Prime 4 not knowing any more about him or his motivations than I did when I watched the first trailer for the game, or when I watched the post credits scene for Prime 3 back in the day.

There is a lot to behold, and a lot of it feels very Metroid Prime-y, but it often wavers when it comes to feeling visionary, in favor of painting by the sci-fi numbers that pop culture has filled in over the years.

we get some Star Wars-y stuff, we get some Titanfall-y stuff, we get a LOT of Giger-y stuff, we get a LOT of "ancient Axolotls and seashells" and only in between all those do we ever glimpse what I would call genuinely cool, Metroid Prime-y cream of the crop.

In fact, I feel I should touch on the design language overall -- even though the art is expertly done and beautiful to stop and inspect, I feel like this game reflects a cynicism to sci fi design that seems to say "we already tried everything, so let's just do some greatest hits again"

There are some EXCELLENT visual designs for bosses in this game, and for the most part they're fun fights. I personally LOVE the Phenoros fight, and its phases. I can't help but notice they did design almost half of the bosses based on spheres and crabs though.

People really overblow the dialogue issue, though I think there should be an option to turn off the kid-proof suggestions of where to go next. For my second playthrough I just turned the dialogue volume off and it felt fine, almost just like the original Prime, honestly.

I do like that the different Prime games have different levels of feeling isolated, because I like when an IP expands its world and feels populated, but I also like to feel like sometimes I'm on the edge of that world, exploring the unknown.

What we get in the game isn't bad, minus a few cringey lines of dialogue from the GF troopers, but I think with a bit of punch-up and a better voice actor for Mac in particular, I would actually really enjoy the banter (I'm biased, because I love Republic Commando)

The Psychic Grapple for Morph Ball also has so many uses in my mind -- so many pinball-like scenarios could have set us up for a world full of item-acquiring playgrounds, and what we get instead is green energy crystals in the sand.

There are just so many ideas that come to mind after only playing 30 hours with it that I wonder what Retro spent 6 years doing. These aren't solo indie devs. I know games take a long time, but this is 1/4 to 1/2 of the game it should have been, especially for $70.

I would have LOVED to have to ride the Vi-O-La between different snowy outposts in the Ice ring, or have to race against time on a track in the Flare Pool, but come back later and make a pit stop along the track to grab a missile expansion, or use Vi-O-La to fight high speed enemies in the mines
December 20, 2025 at 11:23 PM
I think the Vi-O-La was a great idea, and while some complain about the BotW-ification of Metroid, I don't mind coasting around between regions -- HOWEVER this bike has so much more potential to be used for puzzles, smaller journeys within the different regions, and on tracks throughout the game
December 20, 2025 at 11:23 PM
The art ranges from beautiful to serviceable, the music is forgettable but immersive, the new mechanics are full of potential, but the full game only scratches the surface of how much could have been pulled off.

I hate to give Retro a hard time, because I can tell a lot of love went into it.

I really hope that we get some more Metroid Prime before 10 more years go by, but maybe it would be better to get indie spiritual successors instead.

Prime 4 is a fun but shallow dip back into the 3D Samus mood pool.

All I really wish concerning the Vi O La is that there were more bespoke uses in the different regions for it -- tracks, puzzles that use the bike, smaller open spots with areas to get out and investigate. That mechanic along with the other new abilities really needed more usage opportunities imo
