Research on traditional African societies is quite the headache. Even with native authors you can often read a writer’s claim on a culture, go “that doesn’t sound right” and Google the thing to find a slew of OTHER native figures’ writings asserting that the claim, indeed, doesn’t sound right.

Well I can’t reveal more on the project itself yet, I’m planning to detail the results of my research in my newsletter as I go along, cause a lot of what I’m learning is interesting on its own. So if you’re curious join juniba.fr

Still shaping this while waiting for news on the other pitch. I love how certain archetypes transcend cultures and you can build new stories on those connections. My fave archetype is the trickster, and this new project is shaping up to be “yojimbo meets west African lore” with a Djeliya esthetic

While my last licensed pitch is under consideration I’ve started work on another project to pitch, creator owned this time, and I’ve started compiling the influence board, with portraits of the big role models for this one. Setting the bar higher than I have before and a tad nervous!

All I can say is: I avoided overtly west African books (except monkey meat) for a few years so as to avoid being typecast. I think I’ve proven I can do quite a few things and subjects by now so I’m going back to west African lore for the next two indie things I wanna do. Stay tuned.

Some day I’ll give it a shot on something

I’m often tempted to try these digital background tricks for my pages but not only do I suspect these backgrounds would clash with my art, but I couldn’t in good conscience sell original pages that are just characters on white backgrounds
juniba.bsky.social
Those super intricate manga backgrounds make a lot more sense once you realize it’s pictures and 3D models with a filter on. I just wish they didn’t look so similar from one series to another. The same hyper clean straight lines and massive detail

I loved doing it and would again!

Oh it changed a lot! But initially it was a long quest through African folklores with T’challa trying to find a despotic king. The themes remained the same but everything else changed when I decided to do west euro lore instead, another thing I’d wanted to play with

And I want to be clear that nobody so far has been mean or untoward. I’m just puzzled by the mix of big emotional involvement that translates into outrage instead of… well, reading the thing they care about.

What they don’t tell you about working on licensed stuff, is that fans will see an out of context image from your book online, get angry about narrative choices they imagine you made, and then make sure you know how mad they are, all about a book they haven’t read. It’s no biggie, just venting
