The Navy also sent me to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island for a year first to sand off my very-rough edges and get myself caught up academically.

I straightened my dumb ass out, excelled during my enlisted service, made E-5 (PO2, equivalent of sergeant) by age 19, and kept graduating top of my class from all my technical schools (avionics).

I was the only dropout there, though a friend had finished but not graduated. He's an admiral now!

Heh. I quit high school illegally (underage) and ran off and joined the Navy (also underage, but my parents were happy to sign the waiver paperwork).

By age 19, I found myself at sea in the middle of the largest naval surface action since WW2.

My sister (5 years younger) and I are wildly different, too. We were far enough apart in age we never overlapped at the same school and had disparate peer groups.

She was considered a good, well-behaved kid; I was considered...well, pretty much whatever the various antonyms of that are. :)~

My two were close enough in age they tandem nursed for a stretch, and we co-slept, so it was a full bowling team every night, plus cats.

My oldest was fussy and a wildly erratic sleeper. Tough kid. She’s mid-20s and still is. :)

My youngest went to bed relatively easily and slept well…until about 4am, when it became Studio 54 dance-party time.

He’s a serene adult—and an early-riser still, often up before dawn to meditate.

It’s amazing how much less frustrating that sound is after your kids are grown and you’ve been through it all.

Now, I find crying babies an opportunity to make funny faces and noises like lawnmowers and whatnot.

Of course I did that with my own kids, too.

Don’t look to me for life’s answers.
