#StrangerThings5 Vol. 2 is very average. If you’re a superfan of the show, you can enjoy the familiar faces and reliable narrative devices. It just doesn’t do anything all that interesting or even advance the plot that much. It mostly just moves pieces around the board. 3/5 Stars

#StrangerThings5 Ep 7 is mostly buildup. Sure, there’s a fake-out rescue AND death early on, plus an action scene and cliffhanger at the end, but it’s all just wheel-spinning. The real heart of the ep is Will coming out, which at least has its heart in the right place — 2/5 Stars

There’s a lot going on in #StrangerThings5 Episode 6. Per usual, the show delivers heart-to-hearts that are okay at the worst and great at best. The multiple climaxes also end the episode on a high note. Unfortunately, the scattered focus dilutes its impact just a bit — 4/5 Stars

It’s an old joke that the Stranger Things “kids” got too old, but I think that’s a legit reason why the show feels less charming now. When adolescents make pop culture references and insist on using silly metaphors, it’s endearing. When teens do it, it’s cringey #StrangerThings5

#FionnaAndCake Season 2 struggles to balance Fionna’s mundane world with the inherently more interesting Ooo. Fionna’s world isn’t unpleasant, exactly, it’s just underwhelming in an offbeat contemporary drama sort of way, which doesn’t fit the Adventure Time franchise — 2/5 Stars

#StrangerThings5 Ep 5 still feels like a campy CW show at times, especially early on, but the relationship conflicts it focuses on are compelling. Plus, it finally makes the Upside Down unnerving again in a couple ways. It also hits hard with some heart-wrenching fights 3/5 Stars

#Dragonborn is like Harry Potter with dragons instead of wizards… and HP is entertaining, but it’s already been done. Gradually, Dragonborn does differentiate itself in the details, and by the end, there’s almost too much going on, but the multiple twists are effective 4/5 Stars

#EllaEnchanted is thoroughly charming with a whimsical setting full of lovable characters (and some you love to hate) plus a clever plot. The only letdown comes near the very end, after so much strong buildup, with the resolution to the main conflict feeling quite trite 4/5 Stars

#Fablehaven is charming when it’s cozy fantasy… most of the time, but some of the cultural elements are odd (like the “Asian persuasion” line). Then, when it gets adventurous, it gets even weirder with milking and massaging scenes that feel out of place for a kids book 2/5 Stars

#Yellowjackets Season 1 is basically just LOST again. It starts strong, builds to a satisfying season finale, and raises interesting questions with compelling characters… but it’s also clear it doesn’t know where it’s going, which makes it needlessly ambiguous at times 4/5 Stars

#Yellowjackets Season 3 really goes off the rails in the adult timeline, with a lot of random flailing about for drama and a serious lack of Natalie. The teen timeline is similarly goofy at times, but on the whole its starker life-and-death stakes are thrilling enough — 2/5 Stars

Zelda timelines are so goofy. Now that we’re 4 games into the Wild Era, it’s so obvious Nintendo is doing whatever it feels like and setting up mystery boxes just to generate fan interest. Obviously, it’s effective, but it also feels disingenuous #ageofimprisonmentspoilers #Zelda

#StrangerThings5 Vol. 1 builds to a cool cliffhanger, but the road getting there is uneven. There’s slick action and heartfelt moments fans will appreciate, but it doesn’t sustain the charm of Season 1 or the intensity of Season 4. The show has simply gone on too long — 2/5 Stars

#StrangerThings5 Ep 4 is tonally all over the place: goofy, campy & saccharine. It gets some real emotion out of characters like Will & Hopper, but it’s already played similar cards before. The all-out attack at the end is at least suitably exciting for a final season — 3/5 Stars

#Pokemon Super Duper Extra Deluxe Essential Handbook (yes, I’m really reviewing this) is a comprehensive round-up of all the Pokemon, but it could’ve used another editing pass: lots of typos and even some Pokédex entries that don’t make sense out of video game context — 3/5 Stars

#ThePoisonedKing feels like a refined version of its predecessor #ImpossibleCreatures with just as much adventure but more focus on character and theme. Sometimes it still throws in a fetchquest or random magical monster, but that seems like more of a feature than a bug 4/5 Stars

#StrangerThings5 Ep 3 makes me miss when the show felt spooky and heartfelt. Now, it’s mostly goofy or action-packed. The action can be slick, but the humor is hit or miss. As for emotion, a couple of characters are still dependable, but most are underwhelming at best — 2/5 Stars
November 29, 2025 at 2:32 AM
#StrangerThings5 Ep 2 is an uptick in quality now that the plot is moving, even if some of the charm feels more like camp now. The show also still knows how to put tried-and-true character pairings to good use, even if the few newer ones (Will & Robin) aren’t as strong. 3/5 Stars

Dustin is the MVP of #StrangerThings5 Ep 1, showing what it’d look like if characters changed in meaningful ways during the timeskip. Instead, most of them are stuck in their old shtick while looking too old for it. The escalated sci-fi is also starting to look cheesy — 2/5 Stars

#Hyperion is an impressive collection of creative sci-fi stories. The framing device that links them can be a bit of a slog to get through sometimes, though. The book also doesn’t end in a particularly satisfying way, despite the fact the overall experience is engaging. 4/5 Stars

I wrote 1,035 words last week for a mere 148 average per day

Part of this is ‘cause I had family & friends visiting this weekend. I also just feel like I’m out of my groove. I’ve been writing this one for a while and making little, not very good progress on it

#FantasticFourFirstSteps has great vibes between the retro-futurism & pulpy comic inspo. Sometimes, though, it feels a bit muted or even outdated, but the exciting set pieces & earnest performances help elevate it. The fakeout death at the end, meanwhile, is a letdown — 4/5 Stars

I wrote 1,965 words last week. The most was 810 on Wednesday; the least was 0 on Sunday.

I once hoped to write 1,000 words a day. Now I’m a widower single dad who can barely find the time or energy to write. How do you chase a dream when your life falls apart?

I wrote 1,240 words this week.

It’s hard to write in the wake of grief. I feel like I’m writing for a muse who no longer exists.

How can I create art when I don’t see the beauty in this world anymore? Trying to hold onto who I was feels pointless and shallow.

#CampDamascus has a strong voice, both in POV and social commentary, plus an Act 1 that effectively teases conversion camp horror, but Acts 2 & 3 deliver a queer paranormal hunters experience akin to Buffy or Supernatural. It’s not bad, just underwhelmingly unexpected — 3/5 Stars
