If you’re a member of the Computational Methods Division, please join me in my quest to help shape a community where all scholars feel welcomed and supported!
justinho.bsky.social
As International Liaison, I will draw on these experiences to advocate for members from less-represented cultures, strengthen international connections, and support the development of research tools and infrastructures that reflect the diversity of scholars and cultures worldwide.
justinho.bsky.social
My work focuses on building equitable infrastructures: from creating multilingual news datasets that include developing countries to examining biases in large language models that disadvantage non-Western languages.

I’m honored to be a candidate for International Liaison of ICA’s Computational Methods Division!

My journey as a researcher has taken me across the world. These experiences have shown me how cultural and structural barriers shape the way knowledge is produced, shared, and recognized.

Happy to report that I successfully survived #ICA25 with my tiny budget of $100 for a week’s food. I would like to thank all the reception organisers for making this possible.

It was an extremely large room, many of us sit at the back

You would have expected the official app of the largest organisation that studies media and communication to be able to handle line breaks. I have headache reading this… #ica25

In the article, I surveyed the pioneering works that used computational methods to address questions about nations and nationalism, and also propose a framework for future work to follow.
justinho.bsky.social
If you are interested in studying nationalism computationally, this might be an article for you! I talk about a (sub-)field that arguably does not exist yet: computational nationalism studies.

If you have heard enough what LLM can do at #COMPTEXT2025, let us tell you what LLMs CANNOT do in our panel: We don’t need no LLMs (Sat 2:45pm BIG Hörsaal).

I will present my work on the linguistic and contextual bias that I found in a boatload of LLMs (using over 120 different model setups).

Absolutely excited to host a roundtable on "Marginalised Voices and Perspectives in Computational Text Analysis" featuring @krangelie.bsky.social and @indiiigo.bsky.social at #COMPTEXT2025 🙌

We'll explore how bias and marginalisation shape methods and models - and thus scientific quality!

#COMPTEXT2025 is just 2 days away, and we cannot be more excited to meet all participants at the University of Vienna. Please find the updated and final program here: bit.ly/42WZKZa. Please find the city guide for your time in Vienna here: bit.ly/3RsZY3R See you later this week!

If the proposed cuts to higher education go through, the Netherlands could face a similar future. While Brexit is a done deal, the Netherlands still has a chance to change course. Join the strike.
justinho.bsky.social
Given Brexit, declining student numbers, and the resulting financial crisis, we knew this was going to happen; without sufficient funding, universities have to cut cost. Still, hearing it firsthand from people I know was sobering.

Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to speak in a webinar for a group of colleagues from the UK. About ten people attended, and two of them shared that they had recently been laid off.

Please help distribute the survey with anyone whom might be interested!
justinho.bsky.social
We expect the survey to take no more than 10 minutes. We will not collect any personal information, but there will be a field to leave your contact details if you are happy for us to contact you for further questions. The survey will remain open until 10 February.

A few ASCoR colleagues and I are conducting a study on the usage and perception of generative AI in research among communication scholars (broadly construed) and the best practices to minimizing the risks of such use.

Happy to share that my colleagues and I will be presenting a paper on computational analysis of images and texts at ICA 2025. In the paper, we systematically evaluated six approahes that use LLM/LVM to study social media images. If you are interested, check this preview out:

I will be presenting my project, comparative media dataset, which aims to curate a dataset of major outlets in every country in the world. Can’t wait to see you all in Utrecht!
