"The world belongs to the discontented." – Robert Woodruff

Being dissatisfied with "the way things are" is what motivates most creative people I know.

It's okay to not be satisfied with the status quo.

From Donald J. Robertson's book, How to Think Like Socrates:

“People are not upset about events but rather by their opinions of them.” – Epictetus

Therefore, “we should question the assumptions that cause our distress, if we want to get better.”

Hey friends,

@justinjackson.ca just built a “podcast episode artwork generator" tool here:
art.transistor.fm

Wondering if a few people could test it before we announce it publicly?

(Note: it requires in the RSS feed to work)

Don't stay on the runway too long.

Getting a project off the ground requires an incredible amount of energy. You can’t sustain that forever.

If you've been trying to get a project airborne for a long time, and it's still not lifting off, it might be time to move on.

A story in two parts.

Part 1:
Suno AI prompt song description: "I just ate a late lunch (it's 3 pm). Two tacos. I'm feeling sleepy. Please write me an energizing upbeat danceable song to keep me awake."

@beausimensen.com to answer your question that you left in the @thepanel.bsky.social chat:

I do customize these emails, especially the first 1-2 lines.

Sometimes I'll go:

"[ personal message]

I'm working on something new, and I wanted to send you the announcement I'm sending all my friends..."

I like that approach!

I love these photos of @jonbuda.com and me. 😆

Seven years ago, we began building @transistor.fm. Just two people with a dream. Last week, our entire team of six met up for our annual retreat.

Incredibly proud (and grateful) for what we've built together. ❤️
Jon and Justin looking at the camera, arm in arm. Justin is lifting Jon up. Jon has a scared impression on his face I think we're supposed to be wrestling in this photo? Laughing.

Talking to a federal tax agency:

All it took was three phone calls to learn that I needed to send a fax. 🤣

100% to this:

"no actual understanding of what the business needs, or the consumer wants."

You need folks with "experience in the trenches," and actually understand the dynamics of the market, what customers want, how the product works, the pros/cons of different approaches, tradeoffs, etc...

Hasn't been my experience.

The best consultants I've hired come in, diagnose the problem you're having, and roll up their sleeves and get to work.

One example: old company I worked for was having tons of database deadlocks. We couldn't fix it. Hired a (costly) consultant. He came and fixed it. 👍

We have years of battle-tested ideas that customers have requested, which we've prioritized because we know they're reasonable bets.

What we need is more firepower for executing on those ideas (not new ideas to add to the pile!)
justinjackson.ca
This hasn't been my experience personally.

Generally, when I'm hiring someone new, I don't expect them to come up with good ideas right away (that usually comes later, after they've gained a lot of experience).

When I'm hiring, I'm looking for someone to help get the work done.

Consultants/aspirational employees often tell business owners:

"Hire me! I've got lots of great ideas for your company."

Business owners (generally) don't need more ideas.

We're domain experts who speak with customers and leads daily. We have plenty of ideas!

What we need help with is executing.
