Tip: You can add all sorts of apps & games to steam as "Non steam game" and try to run them with Proton. This works surprisingly often

Obviously, there are lots of other indicators of the bubble-ness of this whole situation. Circular revenue, lack of profitability, etc.

But fundamentally it doesn't look like LLMs can deliver on the promise of replacing human workers in most jobs.

I'm not going to make any recommendations, but I'll make a statement:

Since I went Linux-only about 5 years ago, I've gone from hating my OS to loving it.

It might not be right for everyone. But it's free and honestly pretty easy to try out, since you can run it directly from the USB boot stick.

I just posted this same thing elsewhere, but you could try to add it to steam as a "Non steam game" and run it via Proton. I've had a lot of luck with that. It won't work with everything, but it often works and is easy to test out.

Here is a neat trick.

Install Steam, and whatever apps you struggle with finding a Linux version for, you can add it to steam as a "Non steam game". Then run that with Proton. It works with a lot of stuff, not just games. It's how I play Starcraft on Linux!

My tech illiterate wife and 9 year old child both have Arch on their PC's. I update them now and then.

I have arch on my desktop and laptop. For about 2 years now.

I honestly can't relate at all to the "tinkerer" stuff. Has been super stable and solid. No issues, & plasma is easy and beautiful

I strongly believe understanding how a computer works, and how to operate one, is going to be valuable knowledge in 10+ years.

The build: R7 5700X, Sapphire Pulse 9060XT, 32 GB DDR4, 1TB SSD.

$1050 here in Japan, and would have been 40-50% more in Norway.

We'll install Arch on it of course.

Weird, Arch has been the most stable OS I've ever used. I update regularly without trouble, shut it down every day and in the morning I just boot it up and get straight to work.

Even handles 4 monitors on my desktop without issue, which was always a bit of a pain point with other OS.

No thanks

You can install the Blizzard launcher in steam, run it via proton and play Starcraft on Linux. Or Heroes of the Storm or whatever Blizzard games you want, probably.

You can run so many non-Linux supported apps this way, not just games.

Hallucination won't get solved, I think, which really limits the use of LLMs. They are useful if you know how to use them, understand their limitations, and most importantly: You are already an expert in your domain.

Re: GPUs - I bought my 6950XT 3 years ago. The same card now costs 60% more!

This movie was amazing in its ability to be an excellent movie for people who don't know the first thing about D&D and also being an excellent D&D movie. I really, really hope we will see more like it.

You will stop eventually, after having had enough people chastise you for offering a solution to the problems they complain about 🙃

Cool! The world needs more insect games.

The bubble will pop. These companies are running at a massive loss and there is no path to profitability. Once the hype dies off, which it will, VC funding will dry up and OpenAI et al will need to actually make money. Stay strong. It will get better.

I remember having fun with that game as a kid. Bought it to play with my own kids a few years ago.

I have no idea how I ever thought it was fun. Just pure RNG and some games just take foreeeeever to finish.

We don't play it anymore.

My kid built his first PC at age 8, and has been running Linux that whole time. Not a single problem. KDE/Plasma makes for a far better UI than Windows, too.

Lately I've been using Steam with Proton for anything that doesn't exist on Linux and it works great. No reason to stay on Windows in 2025.

Did you even consider that there might be factors at play that you dont know about? Maybe consider curiosity before resorting to snark?

Take your reddit-energy back to reddit please. This place is nice and doesn't need to be more like that toxic cesspool.
