And yes, Game Maker is a good general engine for 2D games, but I know of a few RPGs that were made for it that work pretty well! It might be better if you were thinking of something more action-focused, although you could make a turn-based game with it if you wanted.

Oh, yeah, there are a lot of RPG Maker versions... I think the latest is usually the best, although right now it looks like the latest was released as a Unity plugin? I haven't used that one, so I can't really say how it works... MZ works pretty well, though!

The first two I think of are RPG Maker and Game Maker. RPGM is pretty easy to use, although it's a bit limited unless find (or make) plugins. GM would require much more programming, but it's not a bad place to learn it. I've used both a bit, so I can answer any questions if you have any!
