Hello hello! I moved my teacher self from my other account, @readteachwrite.bsky.social here. I'm excited to learn about new books, new teaching, and new professional development for my teacher self as I move from college-level teaching to early childhood in the next few years!

Has your library curtailed or outright banned anything related to Banned Books Week this year? I'm not talking that you're doing something else (i.e., freedom to read week). I'm talking YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING related to the topic.

Tell me about it anonymously --> tinyurl.com/banning-bbw25
Black text on a red and black background. It reads "Has your library banned events, displays, talks, or anything else related to banned books week this year? Share your story anonymously." It includes the survey link: https://tinyurl.com/banning-bbw-25

GREAT NEWS from Leander ISD. To Kill a Mockingbird, House on Mango St, and Narrative of Life of Frederick Douglass will be returned to classrooms after a massive outcry. Thanks to everyone who spoke up!!!

From an email to teachers today:
*An important update regarding the books that
were previously paused from curriculum use as a
result of concerns around Senate Bill 12.
Thirty-six of the forty books are being reinstated
to the secondary curriculum book list, with
revisions made to the curriculum to ensure TEKS
alignment and compliance with SB 12. Four
titles, Stamped, Melissa (George), Gracefully
Grayson, and The 57 Bus, will remain paused for
additional review of curriculum alignment. Please
note that all books, including these four, should
remain available, or be returned if removed, to
classroom libraries for individual student choice
reading.

“I just kept thinking of the Salem witch hunt … Librarians are often easy to scapegoat because … there’s usually the [one] school librarian, who is easier to single out and attack, especially in social media. The misogyny is strong in the fact that all of these incredible women were targeted.”

**NEW**

Today, the ACLU of South Carolina filed a lawsuit on behalf of public school students and school librarians. They're challenging the constitutionality of the state's book banning law and a memo outlining the state's content censorship policy.

This is a GREAT graphic.

I'm going to add to it this one from @johnnorcross.bsky.social, which visualizes the text below.
Graphic created by John Norcross. It shows how the right is attacking libraries. There are forces meant to remove collections, programs, services, staff, and community relationships on the right. On the left, removal of funding sources.
