As an aside: at the local level (Shincliffe, Durham), I was pleasantly surprised how quickly they managed to redo the road.

I went to bed early one New Year's, a bit sniffly.
Woke up when the fireworks started, because all our dogs (Saint Bernard, dachshund and 2 labradors) had sought asylum in my bed. I nearly suffocated under the weight of a panicked St Bernard.
