That’s certainly true, but still doesn’t change the historical context of a term. Just because it’s no longer complex, doesn’t mean it was never seen that way.

Not arguing this from a technical standpoint, more a semantic one. For some folks “vanilla JavaScript” had a specific meaning when it came to UI code that I think was less complex than Web Components.

Yes, technically it is just vanilla JavaScript, but I think historically the term has been used in the context of basic DOM manipulation, rather than the complexity of web components. I certainly think this could change, just perhaps not what folks would have in mind when using “vanilla JavaScript”.

Probably not, I think web components add another layer of complexity on top of what I would consider vanilla JavaScript.
