New article: "Fundamentals of Solidarity: Race-Based Caucus Organizing in Houston" is live at Urban Affairs Review. I'm grateful to the organizers who let me into their world and work so we could produce this piece. Check it out 👇
Fundamentals of Solidarity: Race-Based Caucus Organizing in Houston - Elizabeth Jordie Davies, 2025
Grassroots organizations often espouse multiracial solidarity as a value but struggle with putting this value into practice. How can organizations, especially t...

Today a student asked me what I was teaching next semester. I told them my race course. They are hoping to join the class, schedule permitting (they major in business). I basically use intro to get the students to study about Race and Politics. I'm a big fan of indoctrination.

That's a big deal because I really haven't heard of white parents having some version of the talk, but it matters so much.

Exactly. Also, Miles and Ellington will learn this from their own experiences fairly early. Not really looking forward to that.

Let me know when you’re free!

I think Miles has basically outgrown Paw Patrol. He hasn’t mentioned it in Awhile. I struggle with how far to go because I don’t want to burden him with adult thoughts, but sometimes…😂

And protect property. 😂

I had to tell my 5 year old that the police aren’t inherently good guys because he was a little too gung ho on his little game he made up. He’s getting a glimpse of his professor dad. Poor thing. 😂😬

OOOOH. We should talk. A main anchor of my book is explaining that situational trust often bears little to no fruit for the most marginalized and that it inhibits community from coming up with lasting solutions to end both state and community violence.

We are making similar arguments, but mine is of course about domestic cooperation. I’ll make sure to cit’s.

I’m otherworldly tired this semester. I just want the allusion of the protections of tenure before they go away next year. 😂😭

Isn’t it frustrating? No evil mastermind, just a bunch of fools with no morals or impulse control.
jztidecat.bsky.social
No, no. I’m not offended but I’m been wringing my hands about whether we are taking them seriously enough.
jztidecat.bsky.social
This is kind of my criticism of being overly concerned about details over outcomes when we think about and react to atrocities.

I get the itch to well-actually, but I’m talking about them nearly killing an entire demographic of people in a few short years regardless of whether it meets the exact definition of efficient.

Nazi efficiency is a myth. There wasn’t a central strategy: there was personality and a guiding ethos, but there wasn’t some well-honed organization or even developed plan. They got in their own way often.

Please scream this from the mountains. Do we really want them to be as efficient as the Nazis before responding?

that said: I think the "it's not fascism unless they're good at it" brand of analysis probably isn't the move

President Trump is bucking tradition and legal precedent in pushing to deploy the National Guard to Democratic-led cities like Portland, Oregon, and Chicago due to what he says is rampant crime and to support his crackdown on illegal immigration.

We might win this thing solely because the Trump administration keeps letting the most unlikable dweeb speak for them, Stephen Miller.

It feels tropical in Albany today. That’s probably a bad thing in October.
jztidecat.bsky.social
Why are you wasting valuable nap time? 😂

People confuse the result (state violence/racial terror) with the goal of nonviolence (obstruction). It’s not about getting your ass beat for show to make white people weep.
jztidecat.bsky.social
yes and that’s its a pragmatic strategy, not some Disney movie like aspiration.
jztidecat.bsky.social
With regard to the Civil Right Movement, the main reason for push for nonviolence was about the fear that more Black folks would die if more aggressive means were used. It wasn't really about solely appealing to the morals of white folks.

It's incredible easy to tell other people what they should sacrifice for the betterment of the country.
