What did it for me after years of stunted progress: Anki deck with the top 2000 most common Japanese words. Went from not being able to read the most basic baby book to comprehending manga in a few months.

You'll be surprised how effective that is in helping you understand literally anything. This will help you with Kanji also. When it's tied to vocab rather than just an abstract concept, it's much easier to "get".

Once you're bored and feel like you got the basics but still can't read anything: trust me the problem is vocab. Switch over to doing an Anki deck of a few thousand of the most common Japanese words. Do that every day.

At the same time you can start duolingo's normal lessons to get a feel for grammar and start building a vocab. At the same time learn katakana. That's used for loan words and you'll be surprised how many English words are in Japanese.
If Duolingo is too slow, get a nice book.

First learn hiragana. I don't care how. If you want free and fuss free use the often maligned Duolingo. There's a separate section for learning the characters.

Played Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 earlier this year and couldn't stop thinking this. We don't need games that take 5 years to make. Dreamcast/PS2/GameCube fidelity is enough.

Interesting then. They process it as something new, while to me it's an homage to things I grew up with.

I wonder: are kids actually playing Undertale or consuming content about it? Undertake appeals to me as someone who grew up with SNES RPGs and shmups. Is the gameplay actually appealing to such a young demographic?
