FWIW I am inclined to believe this. Generative language models that are trained on content are nowhere near the same as AI moderation and recommendation tools. The terms "AI" and "machine learning/ML" have become muddied by the existence of generative language models but they're simply not the same.

The first bit that really killed my knees is the bottom of the last airtime hill before the turn around, then you get that super rough turnaround into the bunny hills, and obviously those all beat the heck out of you too. It's crazy how stark the contrast is between the two halves.

Oh I believe it! That lines up remarkably well with the Titan track, too. Coasters like that are considered "out and back" designs. You go "out" one way, turn around, and go "back" the other.

The Titan track effectively cuts off right at the edge of the "out" part. Going "back" on old wood hurts.

Wildcat was previously an F-tier coaster for me. The fact that it's a solid B-tier now is nothing short of a miracle. I can only hope they bring some of that magic to the rest of Boulder Dash, which is an S-tier coaster that unfortunately is just rough around the edges right now.

Wildcat actually used to be one of the most painful roller coasters I'd ever been on, quite frankly, but the previous owners of Compounce (Parques Reunidos/Palace Entertainment) did a complete retrack of it in the 2023 off-season that effectively saved the ride, in my book.

The bunny hills in the back half weren't retracked at all and you can very much tell!! There are four bunny hills back to back and there's that inward curve between the first two and the second two to get you closer to the station and that transition in particular was absolutely brutal on my knees.

The trade off there is that a full retrack would require even more tree demo, which is really what I think they're worried about there. Hard to balance coaster maintenance against maintaining the natural sightlines of the park's forested surroundings.

I think the best thing Herschend (the new owners of Compounce) can do for it is to swap it entirely to Titan track, to be honest. The sort of "half retrack" that they've done has left it in a weird state, and I think it would be more appealing to general audiences if it were entirely steel.

It starts on the steel Titan track right into the first drop, and picks up more speed than it did originally on wooden track alone, then when it transitions to the older wooden track, it retains that speed, leading to really rough moments on the older profiling that weren't there before.

It's definitely not the history, given that it's only gotten this rough *after* a partial retrack with Titan track (a newer steel track technology that turns wooden coasters into "hybrid" coasters).

I actually think the retrack leads to the coaster picking up more speed than it's designed to.

maybe instead of investing time in finding online spaces that feel as safe as the ones i used in middle school did, i should invest in building a community of people in the real world who make me feel that sense of safety.

it’s harder, but if online is going to be this hard, is it really that bad?

everything needs to be the global town hall now. everything is farming for your constant engagement. everything beeps, everything has bubbles, everything demands your attention, and none of it cares about you.

fedi isn’t any better. it’s just more of that, but complicated.

my yearning for a shared, safe online space is only amplified by my transness. i want a space where i can guarantee that my identity is going to be respected and that my safety is going to be prioritized, because the real world refuses to offer me that. unfortunately, the shared spaces i use do too.

i want social media to be that. i want discord to be that. they aren’t. they’re too big, too much, too chaotic.

i resonated with message boards as a kid because they were the first place i felt socially welcomed and accepted with my quirks. i was able to find niche little places where i could be autistic as i’d like about my weird little obsessions and beyond being just safe, i was *encouraged* to do that.

how invested actually am i in… posting? anymore? i don’t know. has it helped me retain friends, the way i thought it did? has it helped me stay informed, the way it used to? is there any benefit to being informed anymore when being informed lately generally leads to panic attacks?

i don’t know where to migrate to and frankly i don’t know how invested i am in doing the research. not like i’ve used fedi in a hot minute anyway. this platform is becoming increasingly distasteful to use because of its executives, but fedi is an inscrutable machine. i don’t have much choice.

in the midst of all this blue sky chaos i received an email that, once again, my mastodon instance of choice is shutting down.

this is why i struggle with fedi. finding a new instance every 18 months makes it deeply unappealing to engage with, and i don’t have the wherewithal to roll my own.
