Meet the journalists fighting to save Voice of America
The shutdown of US-based international broadcaster Voice of America (VOA) has left a hole in the news environment for people all over the world, especially those living in countries with limited or no press freedom. On March 14, 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the country’s international public media, setting off an ongoing legal battle to save VOA. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is one of the co-plaintiffs, as are the outlet’s White House Bureau Chief Patsy Widakuswara and Press Freedom Editor Jessica Jerreat, who have both been placed on leave. In this exclusive interview, they explain VOA’s singular abilities to cover news worldwide and what may come next for the global media landscape.
