Metal is political but I wouldn't argue it's inherently left wing like punk. It's more individualist and anti-conformist and it depends which bands you listen to and the message they have.

Sticking with black metal, there's also RABM (Red and Anarchist Black Metal) in response to all the nazis in the subgenre. It depends on the circles you're as well, I've seen more metalcore fans be vocally anti-bigot, especially since it has roots in the hardcore punk scene

It does have some problems, especially in the black metal scene where you have NSBM (national socialist black metal) and a lot of people using fascist symbolism for "shock value" but then it turns out they're just fascist, racist, bigoted etc. But there's also a whole topic about racism in metal
