Reducing profit-damaging regulations and letting food safety be guided by the Invisible Flagellum of salmonella just as nature intended
The Trump Administration Agriculture Department will not require poultry companies to limit salmonella bacteria in their products, halting a Biden Administration effort to prevent food poisoning from contaminated meat.

Toxicologist here! This will improve the health of zero Americans. Current synthetic food dyes are not causing health problems, and are often times used because they are actually safer than natural food dyes. Reminder that guns are the #1 cause of death of children but we are going to ban food dyes.
BREAKING: The FDA has officially announced they will be banning artificial dyes in the food supply by the end of 2026

This includes Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3

Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops.

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III.

Remind you of anyone?

The thing about scientific research is that it’s one of the few national investments that’s a clear public good even if you entirely discount the actual ostensible point of it.
New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024.

That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved.

Show me a better investment than that.

Fun fact: mortality rate for measles is 1-3 in 1,000. Yep. That's not a typo. Measles is no joke.

You are statically more likely to get cancer than go to Mars.

I teach a course on the mechanisms of cancer. The most impactful mutations weaken a checkpoint. Weak checkpoints = more errors. Be prepared for weakened food security, healthcare security, water quality etc. ALL OF THESE THINGS WILL IMPACT YOU. Prices will go up and safety will decrease.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Teaching in science, I never thought of it as as political. Today I find myself walking into class and feeling that we cannot ignore the attack on science. The disregard for science the blocking of the CDC, the FDA etc will have a larger negative impact on the American people then the price of eggs.
