Yes, we should strive to make UI simple and make sense, but sometimes drill down methodologies make sense to not overload the user with tons of options. There is a reason we don't have every possible url as a link on the landing page.

I feel like I ran into this a long time ago. I think it had something to do with not being able to modify materials, so what I had to do was at runtime generate a new material via code and apply the desired values. Hope this helps even a little bit.
