December 23 is the date that marks the end of construction for #TokyoTower 🗼. Completed in 1958 with the official name of “Japan Radio Tower,” the 333-meter-tall broadcasting tower was the world’s tallest self-supporting steel tower at that time. Now universally known by its nickname “Tokyo Tower.”

こんにちは At this time of year, I am often asked one question… “Does Japanese really eat KFC as a traditional Christmas meal?”🍗 Well, I know many people believe it, but my answer is No.😆 But it is one of KFC Japan's successful stories. In Japan, our kitchen usually doesn’t have an oven, so we don’t cook roast. Our supermarkets don’t sell big chunks of meat or poultry for roasting. We didn’t celebrate Christmas with a roast dinner. But decades ago, some foreigners wanted to celebrate this special day. One Christmas season in 1971 or 1972, foreigners came to a KFC shop in Tokyo to buy large quantities of fried chicken. They complained they couldn’t get any turkey for Christmas dinner. The company saw it as a business opportunity and launched a marketing campaign to sell KFC chicken for Christmas. They started selling “Christmas party barrels” in 1983, and it became a huge hit. It’s convenient for many people to have a Christmas party without cooking. Recently, KFC started selling special roast chicken for Christmas. It’s not the usual KFC fried chicken. It’s a proper, delicious, and ultimately luxurious roast chicken. You may need to reserve in advance to get it! Thanks to their effort, other food industries followed, and department stores and supermarkets started selling roast chicken legs as a Christmas dinner. It may not be our “traditional meal,” and not all Japanese are big fans of KFC Christmas. (I personally never ate KFC fried chicken on Christmas in Japan!) Today, we remember Miki Endo — a true hero whose courage saved countless lives. During the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of 2011, as chaos swept across the coastal town of Minamisanriku, Miki Endo remained at her post inside the town’s disaster prevention office. While the tsunami sirens wailed and the ocean surged closer, she continued broadcasting urgent evacuation warnings over the loudspeaker 📣🌊—clear, calm, and unwavering. Even as the water rose and escape became nearly impossible, Miki refused to abandon her duty. She chose to stay, using every remaining moment to guide residents to higher ground, urging them to run, to survive, to live. Her voice became a lifeline for the community, cutting through fear and confusion when it mattered most. Miki Endo gave her life so that others could have a chance to live 🕊️. Because of her bravery, many people heard the warning in time and were able to escape the incoming waves. She did not wear a uniform of a rescuer or carry special equipment—only an unshakable sense of responsibility and compassion for those around her. Her story reminds us that true courage is often quiet. It doesn’t seek recognition. It shows itself in moments of impossible choice, in standing firm when fear would be easier, and in putting others first even at the greatest personal cost. Today, we pause to remember her sacrifice. We honor her dedication. And we thank Miki Endo—for her strength, her voice, and her legacy that will never be forgotten. 💐

On December 22, 1963 “Atragon” was released in Japan! Directed by Ishirō Honda, with special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. Produced and distributed by Toho, it is based on The Undersea Warship: A Fantastic Tale of Island Adventure by Shunrō Oshikawa and The Undersea Kingdom by Shigeru Komatsuzaki. The film stars Jun Tazaki, Tadao Takashima, Yōko Fujiyama, Yū Fujiki, and Ken Uehara. Atragon became a popular feature on TV and at film festivals. In fact, it was so popular that it was re-released in 1968 as the support feature for Honda's Destroy All Monsters. It was also the 1964 Japanese entry at the Trieste Science Fiction Film Festival. American International Pictures afforded the film a successful US theatrical release in 1965, with minimal changes and quality dubbing by Titra Studios. The giant serpentine sea dragon Manda later appeared in the 1968 Godzilla film Destroy All Monsters. Manda and the Gotengo, the original and an updated version, were featured in Godzilla: Final Wars. Manda also appears in Godzilla Singular Point, as well in end credits alongside King Caesar.

I know this story has been shared over and over again. But what has NOT been shared is there are other "quiet" stories just like this one that never made it to headlines. A testament that the people matter. NOT just the privileged few in Japan.
