How can therapy help if someone's insurance company is denying them their lifesaving treatment because it is "unnecessary"? It certainly cannot help very well. So when so many people in our country are struggling with basic needs, we need to address that first.

There are other social workers that do jobs relating to the bottom tiers. How can therapy help someone whose stomach is grumbling because they have no food? How can therapy help someone who is worried about having no home to go to after sessions?

Now, take a look at the US populous right now. Many people are barely getting that bottom tier met, if at all. If they are getting that bottom tier met, they are probably struggling with the second tier. My job mainly consists of working with people in the top 3 tiers, as I primarily do therapy.

The fourth tier is self-esteem- confidence, achievement, respect for self and others, individuality. The peak is self-actualization- morality, creativity, acceptance, purpose, meaning.

One of my patients went from thinking he deserved to die to thinking he had a second chance at life in session today. It was amazing to see him go from dejected to smiling. Everyday counts.
