If it were self defense and he was in danger at the time, I think he would have been spared from Hell because he was protecting himself. But I actually wonder if his dad is responsible for Molly's death and that is what made Angel snap and kill him.

I'm gonna bet Angel killed his dad as a revenge thing instead of self defense, and his redemption will be from having a chance at killing another abuser for revenge instead of self defense and choosing not to.
