Crab apples, yesterday. Not tasty enough for the birds until they've been properly frosted.

Some years ago the mistle thrush would come and perch on the very top as she feasted on them.

I love your poem.

We relate to trees in a similar way. Often, treading the same paths, in these woods I've loved for 30 years, I know the curve and line of every trunk. Family, almost. I sometimes find myself placing a hand on one in respectful fellowship.

Heading out of the autumn woods at #evening, I was surprised to come upon this sheep, pregnant - so the sign said - with next spring's lambs.

Lovely!

The silver birches here (UK) are wonderful at the moment. Many are fully yellow now, while a few are still green, and others are speckled lemon-and-lime.

Beautiful again in the woods today. Under the chestnut trees, squirrels are busily collecting fallen nuts. Wet conifers stand darkened by the night's rain, while the sun illuminates a billion autumn leaves.

Why do folk build these woodpiles - most often around the base of a tree - all over the woods?

Perhaps they are playing 'lets build a shelter' and that's as far as they get?

But it dries out fallen wood, increasing the summer fire risk, and impairing insect habitats that would make food for birds.

One of many grand old trees, dark and glistening in the rain at Pencarrow (house and gardens) Cornwall yesterday.

Early autumn walk in the rain at Pencarrow. A beautiful unassuming garden to visit, if you are in Cornwall or Devon, with many massive old trees.

A barcode of #Vertical trees, from last winter.

Sometimes you need a human being in a photo, for scale. If you expand, you can see the tiny woman and her dog!

Yesterday I found myself on a track that took me to a place I'd never walked before, in all my 30 years of loving these woods. The ground fell away so steeply from one side of the path, and I found myself walking amongst the treetops! It was quite magical. #woodland

This autumn, the ground beneath the chestnut trees is thick with fallen fruit. Way beyond the wildest dreams of any squirrel.
