might even cause urban doom loops in a lot of places with weak economies, absent lots of immigration

actually i feel like this depends on the street name somehow?
"he lives on halsted" feels way more natural than "he lives on halsted st"
"he lives on archer" feels as natural as "he lives on archer ave"
"he lives on 52nd st" feels midly more natural than "he lives on 52nd"
November 18, 2025 at 7:32 PM
"drop me off at 55th and Harper"
"make a left on 55th"
"i lived on 52nd street"
"55th street has a bike lane"
feel the most natural to me

hmm i don't think this is quite true? when describing intersections yes it's always dropped in speech, when giving directions i feel like i'd typically drop it, when describing where an event takes place or a feature of the street i'd typically include it i think

my mom was the most egregious offender and my solution was a "consumables only" rule with her
November 18, 2025 at 6:20 PM
one way this manifests is christmas gifts from older relatives, which usually are of negative value for me -- i already own or can easily buy the things i need, but square footage in my apartment is limited and my time for organizing/cleaning my house is limited

this bag pridefully tells a beautiful story about 20th century food/agro science and globalization

accent feels like it's kinda trying to hide what it is vs Ajinomoto takes serious pride in their MSG
November 16, 2025 at 6:09 PM
i think a certain kind of low openness white person needs the feeling of security this place provides and is too afraid to go to an indian or asian grocery and buy a big bag of swad or ajinomoto for $2

i think you ultimately have to compensate people for the opportunity cost, which amounts to aggressive redistribution from DINKs/single people, and thus is very politically challenging

I think the Metra conductors may have a real psychological deterrence effect, but IME I have never seen one actually directly deal with a bad actor, just stop the train and call CPD (which cases an enormous delay)

textbook piracy is easy and commonplace though so i wonder if real spending on college textbooks per student has even gone up over this time

it's really black pilling how strong the political forces are for highway capital spending. following the chicagoland transit bailout coverage it was clear "no net reduction in highway spending" was a line in the sand politicians dared not cross
November 7, 2025 at 8:57 PM
is the grade crossing fully automated or are they using remote monitoring? this is how the australian mainline automation works

Like requiring a metal fire escape on a 6 story building is a much more financially and technologically reasonable burden to impose in mid-late 19th c NYC than 17th or 18th c London or Paris
November 3, 2025 at 8:56 PM
Purely speculative but maybe timelines of anti fire regulations matter? 19th c urban America was much richer and technologically advanced than 17th/18th c urban Europe, which is IIRC when regulations started to go into effect there

another way to possibly link yourself is any Nobel laureate is at most 2 degrees away, via Carl XVI Gustaf and Gustav V

it's sort of an attractor state unfortunately
October 31, 2025 at 10:06 PM
yeah bc it means they get tax revenue from people who work in IL!
October 31, 2025 at 9:58 PM
the calculation i did was annual debt service/daily swipes/365. i guessed $100mm and 10k (so more like $27) which are rough but are the right order of magnitude
October 31, 2025 at 9:31 PM
back of the envelope they are going to be paying $25 in debt service per swipe at the new stations
October 31, 2025 at 9:13 PM
i think the plan is to issue debt to cover the extra $2b but i don't know too well either www.chicagobusiness.com/politics/cta...
Exclusive: The Red Line extension is now a $5.75B gamble for the CTA — and taxpayers
The Red Line extension now carries a $5.75B price tag — raising questions about CTA debt, cost overruns, and whether the project is still worth it.

are you suggesting the Trump admin has a legal mechanism to deny the RLE funds?
October 31, 2025 at 8:52 PM
yeah also MED serves a big hospital complex
October 31, 2025 at 8:51 PM
ok sure but again we aren't relitigating the RLE here
