Every time the US government carries out another novel atrocity, you can count on some clown to come forward and ask "Haven't you been paying attention for the last 250 years?" which must sound so pithy to someone who doesn't feel a stake in anything.

The bryozoan or "moss animal" is the big yellow colonial blob in the middle of the image; many hydroids (the polyp stages of small Cnidaria called Hydrozoa) are growing on it. OP suggests that the bryozoan is somehow protecting the hydroids by repelling animals that would have eaten them.

There is no cup size too small to seize for the public to grope, kiss, lick, and suckle.

I'm not sure. I think most Russian composers sound primarily like themselves, which is as influenced by their time period as by their national origin. Do Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and Schnittke really have such a common essence?

Are you familiar with classical music in general, particularly Russian classical music?

You and white Americans more generally are going to have to talk it over and/or defeat your fucked up relatives *where you are*. There is no running away from the problem.

Absent a fantasy of some kind of unprecedented migration that leaves millions dead in every direction, no lines could be drawn across the US that would have all the liberals on one side and all the conservatives/fascists on the other.

You're imagining a geographic separation that does not exist. What actually exists is 100 million families whose members each believe different things, and who cannot all just move away from each other because you think it's easy to do so. How many of your neighbors and relatives are MAGAts?

The 20th century is full of disasters caused by the notion that people should just uproot themselves whenever the powers that be think it's easier than coexistence.

+ post-WWI Greek-Turkish reciprocal ethnic cleansing
+ post-WWII expulsions of Germans
+ Partition of India (up to 2 million dead)

For one thing, the way out is that Christian nationalism is defeated for good. One cannot silo it off in some big ghetto and expect no further problems. More importantly, HOW DO YOU THINK 100 MILLION PEOPLE CAN MOVE ALL AT ONCE WITHOUT CAUSING THE GREATEST CATASTROPHE IN WORLD HISTORY?
January 12, 2026 at 6:46 AM
Every state, blue and red, comprises a few liberal cities in a wasteland of largely right-wing rural and suburban territory. Furthermore, there are "pro-republic" people in every rural area (e.g. minorities) and "Christian nationalist" people in every city. How do you plan to draw these borders?
January 12, 2026 at 6:39 AM
Well, one ideology overcomes and supersedes the other. I don't think you've understood my contention: geographically splitting the US cannot solve this problem because it is not a geographic problem but an ideological one that exists everywhere.
January 12, 2026 at 6:37 AM
I don't understand why this stupid idea won't die. The "two countries" of the United States are NOT geographically separated; the divide is largely rural vs. urban and Black (and other minorities) vs. white everywhere. Haven't we had enough blood-soaked "partitions" in the last 100 years of history?
