Wild to me that we could get our NEA funding stripped and an Indie Next pick (and big national coverage, watch this space) in a 3 month span. All kudos to @katearden.bsky.social and @rainbowfish523.bsky.social--I truly think @hubcitypress.bsky.social is singular and punching way above our weight.

HOTHOUSE BLOOM is an Indie Next Pick!!! Extremely gratifying that this weird debut novel about apples is finding so many fans out in the world. I was obsessed from the jump. Thank you, booksellers! Only you could have pulled this off.

(Out on August 26, on the (highly competitive) September list.)

GROWTH! 💀🥴
megireid.bsky.social
Another publisher really screwed me over this week, and because I've grown a lot in the past few years, my plan is to not drag them publicly (I instead will embark on a multi-year campaign to tell every, single southern writer I know what they did to us). Growth!

honestly a lack of research from a lawyer with a classics degree pretending to be a writer is so much less concerning than what i found out when i read the goodreads reviews. 90% of them are one star rage posts. HC must just print these books as literal rage bait. at least people are buying them...

i am begging you if you're doing greek mythology retellings to do literally any research at all
I’m just a girl. And it turns out, I’m Hercules.

I’m struggling to survive in a Titan infested world where Spartans, immortals from twelve royal families who have god-like powers and obscene wealth, rule over all. A shy-stammering foster child with nothing, I keep my head down, cover my scars, and focus on excelling in school. At least, I try to. Then it happens.

My blood test reveals I’m part of the powerful elite. I’m one of them. A Spartan.

Once again, @hubcitypress.bsky.social is looking for experienced readers for paid manuscript reading this fall—both fiction & nonfiction. You'd be the first eyes on submissions and help us decide what requires a closer look. Email relevant experience to [email protected]. DM with questions.

It's truly a bummer that PEN/Hemingway award moving to PEN/Faulkner foundation means they eliminated the submission fee waivers for publishers who have less than $2 million in sales. We spend thousands in prize submissions every year just to be considered for these things--it made a difference.

Today is @hubcitypress.bsky.social's 30th anniversary! It's been weird and difficult to have it land at such a terrible moment, spending it talking with arts allies to try to figure out advocacy steps around our terminated NEA funding.

But it's also a great moment to reflect on the anniversary. (🧵)

Well. Despite the NEA nonsense (more on this tomorrow), in good news, it's pub day for WORLD WITHOUT END: ESSAYS ON APOCALYPSE AND AFTER by Martha Park! We're so proud to be publishing this necessary book and hopeful book, something we think folks could use these days. hubcity.org/worldwithoutend

Really hard to say what the worst part of this NEA grant termination letter is (sent at 10pm on a Friday!) but I think it's finding out the federal government's priority for arts funds is now "fostering AI competency" rather than funding literature.

This is to inform you that the above referenced National Endowment for the Arts award has been terminated, effective May 31, 2025.

The NEA is updating its grantmaking policy priorities to focus funding on projects that reflect the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity as prioritized by the President. Consequently, we are terminating awards that fall outside these new priorities. The NEA will now prioritize projects that elevate the Nation’s HBCUs and Hispanic Serving Institutions, celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence, foster AI competency, empower houses of worship to serve communities, assist with disaster recovery, foster skilled trade jobs, make America healthy again, support the military and veterans, support Tribal communities, make the District of Columbia safe and beautiful, and support the economic development of Asian American communities. Funding is being allocated in a new direction in furtherance of the Administration’s agenda. Your project, as noted below, unfortunately does not align with these priorities:
Purpose: To support the publication and promotion of books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
