Intro to our #PSC #liversky #microbiome research 🧵 with
@nickilott.bsky.social

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and the gut-liver axis.

PSC=blocked bile ducts --> liver damage ☹️ and unhappy guts ☹️²

75% with PSC also have ulcerative colitis ☹️³

DYNAMHIX in PSC
We aim to characterise markers of liver function, intestinal inflammation and microbial metabolism over time in a cohort of patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and/or ulcerative colitis...

Do you work on PSC or know people who do?
Hepatologists? Gastroenterologists? Very special scientists?

Get in touch to join the PSC Starter Pack.
We're a rare bunch, a bit like PSC, so let's connect and #letsbeatPSC

Great to be hosted at the VUmc in Amsterdam for a #PSC meeting. It was a new experience to attend a small highly-specialised meeting. We are rare people who work on a rare disease!

So much interest in DYNAMHIX in PSC and the gut-liver axis.

There, she became a leader for digital learning, mentored trainee teachers, and championed STEM inclusion—helping inspire the next generation of scientists. Alongside teaching, she developed a parallel career as an author and consultant, writing textbooks and designing educational resources for...

Her research has contributed to new policies at NHS Blood and Transplant, where her work shaped best practice for the collection and storage of cord blood stem cells.

After several years in the lab, Kate took a detour into secondary education, teaching science and chemistry at Didcot Girls’ School.

Kate’s career path has been anything but linear, and that is something she celebrates. She began her scientific journey in Australia, earning her PhD in Biochemistry at La Trobe University, before moving to Oxford to take up postdoctoral roles in cancer biomarkers and stem cell biology.

Her current work focuses on leading the multidisciplinary clinical research trial DYNAMHIX in PSC Study, drawing together computational and clinical approaches to address important questions in immunology and gut health.

Kate Coldwell is a Daphne Jackson Research Fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, University of Oxford, where she is retraining in computational biology after a successful career spanning biomedical research, education, and industry.

Side note: I included "casual" becasue a real person will be saying this before I speak and I wanted it to sound like something a person who knows me professionally would say.

I read it and it's all true but I coudn't have written it myself.

Why? Becasue, I minimise my acheivements, feel apologetic, feel embarassed and start visualising megalomanics.

I'm banning myself from drafting it (beyond accuracy) because it will not improve how it presents me.

Easier said than done, but worth saying anyway: it’s important to keep an eye on your internal battery and take a meaningful break to recharge when you need it.

More people than ever in the UK are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. For those living with PSC, there’s no cure or effective treatment. Nearly half will need a liver transplant. Register your decision with @NHSOrganDonor today. www.organdonation.nhs.uk
