oh! I remembered your quilling things a bit ago and made this hollow knight one as my first attempt. Definitely need to do more of them, so pretty wall deco and really fun to make!

A multi layered papercraft picture where the top layer is a black piece of cardboard with the shape of the knight from hollow knight cut out. inside the cut out you can see the knight, hornet, quirell, the hollow knight and radiance. it's all made from cut out cardboard shapes, giving it a flat layered appearance.

so it was actually offset slightly relative to the stepper position, i adjusted that by moving the axis and keeping the stepper spindle in place. and that worked!

there isn't much to it, it's mechanically way simpler than i expected. it has no sensors that i can see!

there's a grub screw on the thingy there, i can loosen that and turn it relative to the stepper shaft. so my plan is:
home it
turn it on (so the stepper shaft stays still)
loosen grub screw
move the head close enough that it actually picks up a pen
tighten grub screw
profit

close up on the driving end of one axis. here's a stepper motor shaft, with a taught wire cable wrapped around it, and tensioned with a spring. this winds and unwinds as the axis rotates, and the wire moves along the gantry along a sliding bar. that's all there is!

there are no limit switches! which means he has to just know when to stop. he can also bash into the end of each axis, but when that happens, it's too long to be doing it for sensing. which means he has it stored somehow. nothing about calibration in the manual. i think it's set entirely in hardware

so. the pen claw grabber thingy can physically reach the right place, the axis ends far enough along to get there if i move it by hand. but the motor stops turning slightly before this point. that's why it's not picking up a pen

my plotty boy (a roland DXY-880A X/Y pen plotter) with his lid removed, and his mechanism manually positioned as if he's grabbing a pen. here we can see the gantry thingy is (correctly) at its limit. stopped against the end of the axis. there's no limit switch! we just have to know when to stop
