It occurs to me that the person that checked this book out of Brown's library in 1938 is one of the people I'm writing about later in the chapter, who were building the university's carrier-current system then...

I finally got my hands on his book, and I'm hoping his 1937 research is accurate!

Yesterday I had the great fun of hanging out with WBAU alumni at Adelphi and spending time with Bill Stephney, who wrote this generous endorsement of Live from the Underground.

Totally — I’ve even started making my own DIY workbooks to help students break down arguments and evidence. I think I’m going to make those a larger percentage of the grade to incentivize this kind of thinking and reflection.

I knew about the later Supreme Court case, but not that it was Buckley's company...

In 1974, William F. Buckley, Jr., approved the transition of WNCN in NY from classical music to progressive rock. He proposed to move classical music service to a noncommercial station (the FCC denied it). I had not heard about this, and it was definitely not something I was expecting to find....

I find it interesting that 23% of the original 88 members are no longer affiliated (happened across decades, but a few were right away). Pacifica was going through some changes at that point, but I have to go look...

I finally found the list I've been seeking of the 88 NPR charter members. I mapped the data and added demarcations for public universities. While not surprising, it shows how public radio was built on infrastructure and investment by public higher education. www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/e...

The introduction (which is a long intro) of Peter Coclanis's Shadow of a Dream has an architectural analysis of Charleston, exploring how the inequality he explores in the system of rice cultivation is built into the city. (I might be skewing the details a bit, as it's been a while)

I recently found my first research paper for grad school, and it wasn't pretty. It was about the Velvet Underground and had quite a, uh, pedestrian argument. It was not as bad as I feared, at least!

Looking forward to reading your links!

At Brown today, I'm going on a walk to scope out where students rigged up wires for their carrier-current signal in 1936...

Yes the dean did shut this down

I am embarrassingly slow with editing, but I plan to change that! My new software is super clunky with adding clips, but this does mean I might switch to video and post on YouTube going forward... will see!
