(she/her) digital security for movements with Digital Defense Fund, building a research and community space in the PNW, horror weirdo.
Well go figure it was easy to find some online pdfs of the Jewish Farmer, the early 20th century Yiddish-language agricultural magazine meant to help new immigrant Jews be successful as American farmers. Ex: an intro to selecting a good milk cow!

Anyway it seems our family's farm loan came from the Jewish Agricultural Society, the US org that distributed the Baron's funds to help new immigrant Jews to find self-sufficiency in small towns along the East Coast. I gotta find the archive of the JAS I think, and this magazine!

I showed my grandma our Zeyda's naturalization docs and she suddenly remembered that he got a grant to start a farm in Connecticut from Baron Maurice De Hirsch, a German Jewish businessman who financed "educational and agricultural opportunities for Oppressed European Jewry." Incredible.

Since a few years ago it seems so many more historic immigration documents have been digitized. I'm flabbergasted at how I was able to find full passenger manifests, signed log pages for many of my family's entries.
This is the Wilhelm II, the transatlantic steam ship some came on to Ellis Island.

Ah the Jewish Partisans. They made living in the woods and picking off nazis from the bushes look so good.

Channeling my fashion icons, the Bielski Jewish Partisans, on our last dat in Budapest.

Because there’s something wrong with me I look for surveillance cameras every time I enter some revered space like this basilica. Here one looks up at nothing in particular, maybe to appreciate a fresco.
Two more exist only to ensure you don’t steal a candle without paying the requisite offering.

Got kinda emotional looking at this little surveillance camera (pan-to-zoom style with a black dome, upper right perched on the brown marble ledge). It just sits there looking at art all day and night, generating thousands of eye-popping images that will mostly never be looked at by anyone.

Basilica of St Stephen in Budapest bringing the drama. Deeply curious about their ongoing gold re-leafing expenses.

Pics from the Lukacs baths wiki. Being in here was incredible, what they’ve tried to save of the marble and plasterwork, red grout between tiny pale coral tiles, the old Ottoman powder mill structure that holds these thermal rooms, all as Grand Budapest as it gets. Truly an enchanting old ruin.
November 26, 2025 at 7:17 PM
I love all the opulent thermal baths, but hands down our favorite turned out to be Lukacs, the longest running bathing site in Budapest, since 12th century.
It looks its age, 1960s tile and wood interiors, old sulphur baths in a shockingly large retro complex. What a treasure.

Okay so the Széchenyi baths in Budapest are as stunning as they appear. The private changing/nap rooms are worth the splurge, especially because the entry is in this area with jaw-dropping mosaics.

Re: mysteries of Slavic Jewish family histories, a family photo where the back yields more questions than the front.
It’s layered with notes, the stamp of the photo studio (which country was it in??) and family notes throughout the years, Yiddish upper left, to my grandma’s on lower left.

Saw this illustration and now I have an irresistible urge to crochet a poncho/capelet shaped like a fish head.

Me after causing my county a year of continuous exasperation about our Flock surveillance cameras, hosting public meetings with neighbors, auditing and reporting on our data, pestering the Sheriff and elected officials, only to have them finally decide to take them offline following a PRA lawsuit:

I've learned many different alphabets in learning foreign languages, but this is the first time I'm learning one mapped to a language I already speak.
The next big challenge will be picking up contracted braille, which is partially semasiographic! Aka some characters convey meaning, not sound.
November 11, 2025 at 6:37 PM
I love how this chart shows the cipher-like logic of braille. The placement of dots in each cell is systematic. You can tell instantly by touch if something’s a letter, a number, or punctuation, just from where the dots sit within the six-dot grid. Very clever!

Alas I forgot my ham radio. The repeater is up here and I would have finally had success listening to anything at all. We struggle to get any reception, usually blocked by our position on our mountain.
Anyway here’s me being peak passenger princess, getting carted to the top of Mt Defiance:

Rolling up to remote industrial or telecomms installations is my favorite thing about off-roading. In the presence of technological megastructures, I feel the Soviet Bloc heritage awaken in me like a sleeper cell.
November 9, 2025 at 12:34 AM
Girls just wanna have off-road access to a spooky remote mountaintop with telecomms infrastructure that looks straight out of a video game.

Girl, we did it! Rearranging your entire life for decades to serve the public interest, in spite of world events and all good sense, actually paid off!!

I have to tell anyone who will listen: I just got my “ribbons” indicating I officially will be getting my six figures of student loans forgiven.
10 years of my life! 17-22% of my post-tax income every month for over 10 years, now back in my pocket. I’m free! I’m free!!

We decided my clown name is Scam Likely. I’m sad because I call you every day and you never pick up. ☹️

Honestly starting to get the appeal of this whole clowning thing.
