As the most recent past Chair of the Amador County Democratic Central Committee, I am proud to endorse Kate Sills as the Democratic Party candidate for Congress in California’s 5th District. At this moment in the life of our district—we don’t need a candidate who trims their sails to chase some imagined political middle. We need someone with courage, integrity, and a strong backbone. Someone who knows who they are, what they stand for, and who they are willing to fight for. I believe Kate Sills is that person. CA-5 is a proud rural district. We care deeply about our friends and neighbors, about the men and women who have served our country in uniform, and about preserving a way of life rooted in mutual respect, independence, and community. Those values don’t come from poll-tested talking points. They come from lived experience and from the courage to stand up—even when it’s hard—for what truly matters. Kate Sills brings that courage. According to this Washington Post report, on September 2nd, Pete Hegseth gave an unlawful order to kill all of the occupants of a boat in the Caribbean, alleging that they were drug traffickers. He provided no evidence to support his claims. And even if the claims were at all true, we cannot legally kill drug traffickers outright. In this strike, two people survived, and then were killed in a second strike, to fulfill Hegseth’s order. According to Todd Huntley, who advised Special Operations forces for seven years at the height of the U.S. counterterrorism campaign as a military lawyer: even in warfare, killing the survivors if they were no longer able to fight “would in essence be an order to show no quarter, which would be a war crime.” This is murder. This is a war crime. Congress, not the Executive, has the power to declare war. When senior officials issue or carry out unlawful orders, accountability isn’t optional. It’s our duty. The impeachment process begins in the House, and it should begin for Pete Hegseth. We owe our service members, our laws, and the people of this district nothing less than the full measure of oversight the Constitution demands.
