I’ve read some fascinating research that suggests that the transition from longhand first drafts to typewriters made a massive difference: I’ve tried both and would believe it!

Oh noes! Do keep complaining to the senior editors—eventually they may get annoyed enough and send it to a different outsourced production company (which is where we got to in the end). I had to redo a lot of work, but it did get done and progress!

We had a similar mess with a previous book—I got my series editor to complain to the commissioning editor which went further up the chain and produced much better results than author and production caught in a loop.
