The Warrior of Capestrano is from that kind of area - doesn't look similar. From C3rd or so the states generally look pretty Hellenizing. Sorry I can't be more help!

I'm not an art historian, but that doesn't look like pre-Roman Italian art to me. Can't think of any massive statues with big heads like that.

Is it a chicken? Am I hallucinating? Why does the museum not mention this??
katherinemcdon.bsky.social
Ok, I get it, you all like the chicken.
katherinemcdon.bsky.social
I'm sorry, but for budget reasons, your chariot to the afterlife is scheduled to be pulled by a chicken.
Small votive dedication to Hades showing a man in a chariot and, sorry, a chicken. With greek inscription.

Anyway, that's all for now - worth a visit!
Outside display of funerary monuments. They are arranged either side of a cobbles path. The sky is blue above.

Monument to Marcus Varinius Areskon, tragic actor. Dressed as a jaunty soldier, but with a female mask behind him - versatile guy, love his work.
Light-coloured stone monument to Marcus Varinius Areskon, tragic actor. Close up shot of the same. Light-coloured stone monument to Marcus Varinius Areskon, tragic actor. Museum label explaining he is a tragic actor who played military and female parts.

Love your hair, your ornatrix has skills. No notes.
Stone bust of a Roman-era woman. Her front hair is in marcel waves. Her back hair hangs down (in a net?) at the back and is folded into one big curl on top. Same bust from the front. Stone bust of a Roman-era woman. Her front hair is in marcel waves. Her back hair hangs down (in a net?) at the back and is folded into one big curl on top. From this angle we can see the folds of her chiton-style cloak better.

First up, unknown people and provenance. Terrifying, in manner of Bohemian Rhapsody video.
Low relief on stone showing six faces looking straight at the viewer, with three faces above and three below.

I enjoyed a lovely (if rainy) trip to Thessaloniki this week. While I'm waiting for a train, enjoy some selections from the archaeological museum.

You are so welcome, it's been so exciting!
katherinemcdon.bsky.social
I really can't emphasise enough how exciting this is to a very specific set of people 😄. As well as some new spellings of known names, there is also at least one new word. Imagine giving that to the world! I love archaeologists.

When you study a language that has, say, 500 inscriptions surviving and someone out of the blue SENDS YOU FIVE MORE...! I don't think I've ever cancelled my plans faster than when Dan sent me these. So pleased everyone can read this wonderful publication.

If you remember last autumn when I was live-skeeting excavations at Rossano di Vaglio, the first report of that work has just been published (in Italian). Happy for it to see the light of day, and also very pleased to present five new Oscan inscriptions to the world...

Truly baffling to see all the huge NO TO EAST-WEST RAIL banners around the villages to the south of Cambridge (at least when I lived there a few years ago, don't know about now).

Our building at @durhamclassics.bsky.social is looking much smarter after repairs this summer - but we kind of miss our purple front door!
37 and 38 North Bailey, Durham. The left hand building is red brick with black beams above. The right hand building is a duller brown brick, with a cream front door. The sky is cloudy above the buildings.
