Fun fact:

Did you know that 30% of the US Federal workforce are military veterans?

When you tear down civil servants, you are disproportionately tearing down veterans who put their lives on the line for their country.

This map is helpful in explaining key migration routes into western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee in the 18th century.

Settlers were more likely to have first arrived in America in Pennsylvania, not coastal North Carolina.

Tragic end to a tragic life:

My 3rd great grandfather spent the final 5 months of his life in the State Hospital for the Insane at Danville, PA.

His care was paid for by the Overseer of the Poor in his home township, and his unclaimed body was donated to the Anatomical Board for medical research.

Excited to have my sailing and genealogy worlds collide this week! Helped a sailing friend transcribe a diary entry from 1835 describing an early US yachting competition. Was able to transcribe this word for him. ⛵️ #genealogy

My most interesting genealogy discovery of 2024:

Finding out my 3rd great grandfather was sentenced to two years hard labor at Fort Jefferson on Dry Tortugas during the Civil War.

I located his court martial paperwork, his CMSR, and his name in the Fort Jefferson prisoner log.

My recent genealogy research has been focused on a German Jewish family who settled in Harlem in the late 19th century. Brushing up on my history of the neighborhood during this time period. #genealogy

A little weekend reading- I’m fascinated by the history of the Great Wagon Road and its importance to trade, migration, and settlement in Appalachia during the 1700s. Understanding migration routes is essential to good genealogy research. #genealogy

Recently made an interesting discovery when reviewing the 1870 US census record for my great grandmother. Her mother was a widowed Irish immigrant raising 5 children in Manhattan.

Their address?

“On this page are shanties on Goat Hill between 56th & 57th St between 2nd and 3 Ave”

Received my last set of documents today for my DAR application!

It has been a complicated but rewarding process researching my lineage back to Samuel Kerlin. DNA match analysis unlocked a tough brick wall in my tree, and nearly 40 records later I think I’ve got a solid case!! Fingers crossed 🤞
