Start of review: One of my reading goals for 2025 is to read more non-fiction books, so I was excited when the Bestie Book Swap Book that Amanda chose for me in January was a nonfiction book. See next image for continued review. Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive is Stephanie Land’s memoir, where she chronicles her struggles with poverty and cleaning other people’s homes to survive and support her daughter. While there were moments in her story that left me frustrated with some of her choices and circumstances, I still respect everything she did to make it work for herself and her daughter, as well as her determination to eventually pursue her dreams. Prior to reading the book, I watched the Netflix miniseries, and I enjoyed being able to compare the two mediums and see what creative liberties were made when creating the story for television. I appreciated how the book went into greater detail about Land’s challenges and the lengths she went to in order to care for her daughter. I was especially moved by her discussion of the stigma surrounding poverty in the United States and how people treated her when they learned she was on food stamps. This reminded me of how easily we overlook the struggles of others, and I’m grateful for how Land’s story emphasized the importance of treating people with kindness and empathy. As a reader, there were parts of Land’s journey that I found frustrating. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t question a few of her decisions, but hindsight is 20/20. I’m sure looking back, even the author sees there are things she could have done differently, but the information provided in the book are part of her story that deserve to be heard.
