🚨 Urban Stats 30.0.0 🚨

Added international weather data to urban stats!

Also: added minimum daily temperature averages (and averages by season); seasons now represented by months not astronomical seasons.

You can now create global good weather maps!

Opposition to abortion on genuine grounds of utilitarianism would be strongly supportive of contraceptive access. Anti abortion types generally are not, because they don't oppose the destruction of fetuses, they oppose a world where sex exists for reasons other than procreation
kavi.bsky.social
Republicans oppose abortion for the same reason they oppose gay marriage or trans people existing publicly: because it contradicts the vision they have for how society should be rigidly organized around gender lines
kavi.bsky.social
In general the Republican anti abortion position speaks liberal language, of rights and utilitarianism, so liberals imagine that it's a more popular element of the Republican social platform, but it isn't at all; and the utilitarian/rights language is just there because liberals humor it

He also needs to wear his thoughtlessness on running pro-life candidates. Coates calls him on the issue not being popular even in red states and Klein basically goes “ah, well, never-the-less”.

I'm pretty sure, this is called, swimming
Fun fact board saying "#200: penguins fly underwater"

Like there's not that much real here beyond some datacenter construction. These companies don't employ a lot of people (like Microsoft does, but not people who actually work on the AI stuff) or underwrite mortgages or anything
kavi.bsky.social
2008 was bad because of the fact that it involved the housing market and loans and stuff. This is almost all investment and the valuations are almost all expectation. If it bursts it just kinda disappears imo

The debate here really seems to be "we should completely restructure society in a reverse one child policy dystopia in order to prevent economic growth from going from 3% to 1.8%"
kavi.bsky.social
Taking slack out of other parts of the economy (you could call this degrowth if you like, but like, a lot of it is just stuff like not doing 1000 hours of community review for everything) would be much easier economically and politically than trying to actually get more kids to exist

I mean like the thing about this kind of threat is it's imo pretty idle. He made a similar threat against Newsom and never even tried following through
kavi.bsky.social
The original source suggests it's more a "I'm a bottom, I'm just a little guy, I couldn't actively plan treason 🥺🥺" type defense, which is hilarious coming from a roman centurion; like bestie you lead troops

Everyone always says Boston is expensive, which is like, not true objectively, but is true relative to the amenities you get
kavi.bsky.social
Lmao I have a similar salary to rent ratio for *half* a 2BR in *Boston*

Yeah, I think that liberals have largely internalized that this is an error that people are making, but not so much with femicide
kavi.bsky.social
The indian number system names 10⁵ "lakh" and 10⁸ "crore", using these instead of million and billion for numbers in the order of magnitude range 10⁶ to 10¹⁰. It's commonly used for money, but in the same way people will say "this house is 3 million" to mean "3 million dollars"
kavi.bsky.social
Yeah sorry nonstandard term in the American context but all statistics are out of it for some reason
kavi.bsky.social
Society doesn't really know what to do with the actual femicide problem (driven by IPV) so we have displaced it onto a belief that women are under constant threat from strangers
kavi.bsky.social
Like this is an order of magnitude difference.
kavi.bsky.social
The numbers are such that I'm pretty sure this holds even if you exclude stuff like that. 29% of homicides of men are by strangers, it's 10% for women, which, multiplying through with the murder rate by gender, is 2.7/lakh for men and 0.26/lakh for women
kavi.bsky.social
I feel like I see this a lot from even fairly moderate or liberal people, there's this belief that women are like extremely fragile and constantly at risk in cities. Despite the fact that men are way more likely to be attacked by strangers (ofc some of this has to do with differences in behavior)
kavi.bsky.social
I wonder how much of this is unironically just sexism causing them to believe that men in general are orders of magnitude tougher than women in general and therefore cities are just no good for women
kavi.bsky.social
These are basically entirely unrelated. I don't really understand how you're connecting them at all. Immigration enforcement is carried out by different agencies, is not generally discussed in the same context as corruption, is not talked about by the same people for the most part, etc
