Yes, I think a lot of times people mean old English, because they don't know that Old English is a thing. At least the sixth former sitting next to me was relieved that it was easier than the Chaucer she's currently studying.

Choir leader (who is English) did OK with Kynges, but not so well with alle, dereling, or blyssid. And it's not fair to give 1st language Welsh speakers middle English vowel sounds including 'y' in the middle of a word.

M was hoping they'd have it on Alba so she could watch the last few minutes (after we'd watched the Welsh match on S4C) but they didn't so she had to watch it in English instead - there were many very happy Scotsmen cuddling though, so that was nice.

I know what you mean, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm genuinely remembering it - my (Salvationist) upbringing was very 'mix and match' with regard to words and tunes.
