I 100% have been thinking the same thing as I’ve been working on the proposal for my fourth book.

I just started a Zotero library for the project I’ve been ruminating on for about a year. I’m psyching myself up for putting this idea out into the world.

Sometimes there is nothing better than a walk outside. During my walk just now, I had a major brainwave for this book idea I’ve been considering for the last year. I think the last piece might have just clicked into place.

Her first book was good but I liked this even better. It was just brimming with kooky lovable characters.

If you’re curious what the 5-star reads were:
- “Destiny’s Surrender” by Beverly Jenkins
- “Sounds Like Love” by Ashley Poston
- “A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping” by Sangu Mandanna

I’m laid up for two weeks, which means plenty of time to catch up on reading. I just finished three 5-star fiction books and am now digging into “The Digital Accessibility Handbook for Libraries,” which is excellent thus far. If I have to be out of commission, I’m glad I have tea and great books!

I borrowed the DAMA-DMBOK book via inter-library loan and it's a fascinating look at the business version of data management. I'm in academia where each lab is its own kingdom and I can't imagine doing data management at the scale covered in this book.

My work here is done.

I would like to note that it is @kbriney.bsky.social 's fault that I look at bar graphs in a paper and immediately think "well, that should have been sorted in order of priority to tell a better story"

October:
Midwest Data Librarians Symposium -- I'll be speaking about @kbriney.bsky.social and I's examination of books about data management written for a librarian audience

This great regional conference already has a waiting list! (2/)

(1) In my experience, when data management doesn't happen until the end of a project, about 80% of DM is detective work (what are these values, why is data missing, how do we handle this messy data)?

This way of working is tedious, often frustrating, and can lead to lost or misunderstood data.

I went to @nhm.org this weekend and really enjoyed the PST Art exhibit about the making of museum dioramas. I'm now reading the exhibit book, "Fabricating Wilderness," and it's fantastic. It's such an interesting blend of history, science, and art, describing the 100 years of dioramas at the museum.
Cover of the book "Fabricating Wilderness" showing a diorama of a family of mountain goats overlooking a valley in the background.

I get that. I buy sunscreen in bulk every summer.

I really love long-sleeved swimsuits (yay less sunscreen to apply!) until it's time to go to the bathroom. A little better is a rash guard over a bikini...

And I just sent off an email to the publisher of my second book asking why the copyright wasn't officially registered when it looks like it's written into the book contract that the publisher will "take all steps required to secure this copyright" in the US.

I'm spending my afternoon going through proofs of "The Data Management Workbook", which will probably come out in early 2026.

This is one of the best times in the book writing process because the hardest work is done and you finally get to see something that looks like a book!

I finally made it over to BlueSky. Looking forward to chatting about data management, ISO 8601, and other random stuff with you all here.

Thanks! I haven't even done my first post and I'm already feeling welcome.
