On this day in 1847, James Laurie “Deacon” White was born in Caton, NY. Though a standout catcher of his era, he actually played all 9 positions very effectively. Here’s my painting of him with the Detroit Wolverines in late April of 1886, based on the photography of Frank Tomlinson.
