Here's the last installment in my series of year-end post update.

In this post, I mocked a 1956 commercial in which Stevenson appeared to be faking knowledge of farm issues.

Adlai Stevenson, Fake Farmer
In 1956, the Stevenson campaign put out an ad to show that he understood the problems of family farmers. He failed miserably.

Resuming my year-end post update sries!

In the runup to the 1952 convention, the Kefauver campaign was worried enough about "gag shots" of "girls in coon-skin caps draped over tables" that it issued a ban on any more such shots.

This is well worth reading. Moynihan and Kefauver had very different political styles, but they had one thing in common: they shared the policy goals of Democratic "reformers," but personally identified with the party's "regulars."

Merry Christmas from the Kefauvers!

This was Estes Kefauver's 1958 Christmas card. Kefauver was famous for sending out tons of Christmas cards every year.

As we wind toward the end of the year, I'm updating a few posts based on some additional research.

Today, I've got an update on how Kefauver turned "Senator from Tennessee" into a campaign song in 1952... complete with new lyrics.

Miami is Kefauver country!

These two gentlemen are making their preferences known at the 1952 Democratic convention in Chicago.

Kefauver lost the Florida primary to Senator Richard Russell of Georgia, but he won Dade County (where Miami is located).

Kefauver's going Dutch!

Here, he's trying on a pair of wooden shoes from Holland, Michigan at the Chicago airport in September 1956, while Adlai Stevenson and Stevenson's children look on.

Are you a certified Kefauver supporter? I am!

These certificates, from Kefauver's initial 1948 race for Senator, were given out for a $1 contribution. This one belonged to Cooke Kefauver, Estes' father.

Look out below, Keef! You're in for some tough sledding.

The kiddies love Kefauver!

The Democratic VP candidate poses with a posse of adorable youngsters during a visit to Sacramento in October 1956. (They met his plane at the airport.)

I enjoy how genuinely happy (almost) all the children look in this picture!

In April 1952, Hubert Humphrey introduced a bill to allow ex-Presidents to serve as Senators at large.

It was a sop to Harry Truman, who'd just announced that he would not run for re-election. (The only living ex-President at the time was Herbert Hoover.)

Another campaign button from the 1956 election!

“Hardy” is Rep. Porter Hardy, Jr. of Virginia, who rolled to re-election and went on to a 22-year career in Congress. Like most VA Dems of the era, Hardy was a segregationist and loyal foot soldier in the Byrd machine.

C'mon, boy, let's go hint some big game!

We got some snow today! Not enough to break out the snowshoes, as Kefauver did in New Hampshire in 1952. We got a strictly conversational amount of snow, but it was pretty to look at.

Stand back, I'm on staff!

This button, obviously, is from the 1956 Presidential campaign. As a font nerd, I'll point out that the two fonts on this button don't go together. (I'll refrain from arguing that this was a metaphor for the campaign itself.)
