Thanks. That’s quite a song to have played at a wedding! Like ‘Y Reg’, also on ‘The Yamaha Years.’ I came close to choosing ‘The Man Who Lives On The M62’ from that LP but ‘Y Reg’ won out in the end. #JohnShuttleworth is fantastic :-)

#90sTop30 (xxx) ‘Y Reg’ #JohnShuttleworth. Thanks to @tansleyjames.bsky.social for this challenge. Ending with some typical songwriting brilliance from Graham Fellows - also features car noises, like ‘Autobahn’, but more vocal harmonies and some auto-accompaniment. Oof! m.youtube.com/watch?v=I9Lh...

#90sTop30 (xxix) ‘World In My Eyes’ #DepecheMode. On first listen I thought Kraftwerk had been rendered redundant by this. It’s a song celebrating a fairly universal subject with a synth-based arrangement of drive, subtlety, melody & beautiful harmonic nuances. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_i...

#90sTop30 (xxviii) ‘When Do I Get To Sing “My Way”?’ #Sparks. A song that works well with a variety of arrangements (I was very impressed seeing it played live in Glasgow a few years ago); on record the arrangement is “early 90s electronica.” Exceptionally catchy too. m.youtube.com/watch?v=C8dq...

This is a good article - and a story quite aligned with what happens in my day job at @thebaytrust.bsky.social, though we don’t yet have a “best anecdotes from hosting nature in our garden” competition… that’s definitely something to consider!

#90sTop30 (xxvii) ‘TV’ #ElektricMusic. This sounds like a “what might have been” piece, had Karl Bartos not decided to leave Kraftwerk. Really shares a melodious dna with previous co-compositions of his and has a fine thematic outro too. m.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ_X...

There is. Not sure it has any sort of coherent narrative though! A warning about wearing pyjamas on the moor might have been the oddest segment - not that I was attired that way, but apparently it was not unknown for some folk to do this (according to a chap chatting by his garden wall.)

It was a September. There were a few amusing moments along the way! Windy but quite sunny weather.

That’s a fine spot. I walked from there, across Blea Moor, to Ribblehead station once. Maybe not as picturesque as Lemn’s wander but still a joy :-)

#90sTop30 (xxvi) ‘To Step Aside’ #PetShopBoys. An historian’s song, really, with some of the Iberian musical flourishes that feature on a few of its parent LP’s tracks. m.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZKA...

#90sTop30 (xxv) ‘The Sea Still Sings’ #MarcAlmond. Surging, swelling drama - with occasional temporary calm - here. The strings and emotion of Almond’s voice carry it. His fine composition nods Brel-wards and I can imagine Scott Walker or Nina Simone singing this too. m.youtube.com/watch?v=2nTn...

#90sTop30 (xxiv) ‘Techno Bell’ #808State. Early decade dancefloor-oriented number from a band not scared to include quite pretty melodies (here with what sounds to be some sort of treated synth bell) in their tracks and elements to convey differing dynamics/feel too. m.youtube.com/watch?v=YJjl...

#90sTop30 (xxiii) ‘Surprise’ #ClaudiaBrücken. A quite brilliant recording, featuring what sounds like a scrapyard full of found sounds and anthemic synth parts akin to Wilder-era Depeche. Brücken’s voice, both sung and manipulated, works with it all seamlessly. m.youtube.com/watch?v=xtIE...

This was followed by an informative session, by Dr Dave Harvey on ensuring quality in outdoor learning and an intro to the new @outdoor-learning.bsky.social guide. One for us at @thebaytrust.bsky.social to look at :-)

#90sTop30 (xxi) ‘Sound’ #James. With a relatively soft four-to-the-floor pulse all manner of musical elements strum, slide, swoop or arrive with vibrato here. Those trumpets may be the most sublime part of the collage. m.youtube.com/watch?v=wazt...

#90sTop30 (xx) ‘Some Distant Memory’ #Electronic. A rhythm that may be a cousin of Kraftwerk’s ‘Numbers’, plus punchy synth bass, underlying lovely motifs by bells, guitar and - at its glorious end - synthy strings with oboe (then playing out by themselves.) m.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ti...

#90sTop30 (xix) ‘Protection’ #MassiveAttack. Stately, lulling and with a lyrical strength from #TraceyThorn that meant it edged out the also superb ‘Teardrop’ (featured on BBC Radio 4 #AddToPlaylist yesterday) as my selection. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protect...

When the red card came, I wondered if it would be Uruguay in ‘86 all over again (albeit a draw that wasn’t scoreless.) Fantastic result (and thus some great reward (sorry!) re next summer…) in the end and three great goals as part of it.
