Castle Street, 1880s and 2025

With St George's Church on the left - opened 1726 and demolished around 1899,

It could be earlier than 1880s I think. If anyone has read 'Her Benny', published in 1879, this church was mentioned a few times and was where the girl used to sell matches, I think.

Netherfield Road South, 1910s and 2025

Ann Fowler's, originally a Welsh Chapel in Everton, became a Salvation Army hostel for women in 1907. It served as a refuge for homeless and vulnerable women. Eventually demolished in the late 1970s due to disrepair and the need for urban redevelopment.

Great Charlotte Street, 1961 and 2025

Original photo shared by Matt McHugh-Iddon

Before St John's precinct was built, Great Charlotte St ran all the way from Ranelagh St through Queen Square to Whitechapel. The Royal Court is behind the light coloured car on the right

With the pre-war version of Blacklers just above the women in the older photo and the postwar rebuild (now a Wetherspoons) in the modern one. From right to left there was Market Street, Deane Street then Great Charlotte Street

Aha! This is the first time I've been able to understand how those steps came to exist, from other angles it makes no sense but you can see here how the end of Elliot St was an incline that they've then levelled and the steps join it back to Lime St - been pondering that for years!

Ahh.... The Jacey - every teenage boy's target (and what a letdown when I eventually got in there if I remember correctly) 😄

Will be late 1960s if that is St John's under construction rather than later alterations I think. Concourse House is showing in the older one (built 1967-69 and demolished in 2009). The Crown pub and Lime Street Station both still visible...
