My impression is that climate science used to have a lot more uncertainty about the downside risks than it does now, and apocalyptic concerns made more sense 20 years ago.
We're still at the beginning for AI safety; with so little information it's hard to rule out very bad outcomes.

I suppose that's right for most models. Though I do wonder how well an LLM specifically trained to pass the Turing test would do.
