#Leander writes about how AI, Google Ad Settings in particular, uses text, images, and media to build user profiles “somewhat in the image of AIs themselves— relatively simple actors with rules and patterns.” Besides being invasive I find this practice inaccurate. What do you think? #edu800fall25

#Leander writes that “the assemblage of AI is in part shaped by our discourse about it.” I really connected with this quote. #edu800fall25

#Leander uses the term “savior” to refer to an intelligence explosion and “oracle” for the meeting of algorithms, big data, and literacy. I personally think it’s hyperbole but do you think words like these are overkill or appropriate? #edu800fall25

#Mills also states, “In formal settings, the most powerful examples of digital literacy programs were based on learner rather than teacher interests.” This goes back to the Leu article. Students need that buy-in to fully engage with their learning. #edu800fall25

In #Mills I most agreed with the third (truncated) definition of Literacy, Lankshear & Knobel’s: “as ‘socially recognized’ ways of communicating ‘through the medium of encoded texts… as members of discourses’ (p. 4).” Which definition on the second page do you think defines Literacy? #edu800fall25

Where Knobel left off #Mills picked up. She does a thorough literature review and gives a plethora of examples under the umbrella of New Literacy Studies. #edu800fall25

I liked the quote by #Knobel at the end of the article. I would like to hear more about new ways of learning though. #edu800fall25

For teaching, #Knobel et al. choose three practices: teacher engagement, “ways of speaking,” and feedback assessment. The third resonated most with me, as I’ve done some work on gamification and deep learning. #edu800fall25

Quoting #Knobel “As practical literacies - all literacies, new or conventional- involve bringing technology, knowledge, and skills together within contexts of social progress.” This was a solid definition that stood out to me. #edu800fall25

In #Leu the authors discuss the deictic term literacy and its ever-evolving meaning. I thought that was really interesting. It reminded me of the term Digital Divide which has come to different definitions when it gets down to it. #edu800fall25

Quoting #Leu “A good tool could successfully bridge teachers’ own gaps between traditional and newer literacies.” Here the authors are talking about using Strategy Tutor. It’s also something I see as needed in my library. #edu800fall25

#Leu mentions the need for turn-around pedagogies and says digital native adolescents are not as skilled when it comes to locating information. I see this on a daily basis at the library where I work with young students. #edu800fall25
