Environmental Science and ESL teacher in Savannah. Avid reader and lover of animals, I am a run-of-the-mill progressive atheist living in the Bible belt. No DMs, please, I will not answer them
"Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none."
William Shakespeare
Pike's hair is hilariously appropriate BECAUSE I am old enough to remember Vanilla Ice. SNW is endearing in its tounge-in-cheek cheesiness.

I see these all the time. Huh, I must live near a niche market for EV trucks.

Every Georgian I know who sees kim chi for the first time has said something like "Yum! Spicy Korean chow chow"
Between that and barbecue- low country/Korean fusion food is more common than I expected to see when I moved here from Colorado 😄

That being said: That strike was evil.

I think what we are losing is our good self image. The soullessness has been around for a while 😭 Iran-Contra was not particularly in line with the image we have of ourselves as a country. Maybe this administration is simply forcing the people to face America's dark side.

I'm not seeing the problem. If birth rates don't fall the entire planet will be covered with unfed human infants. Ten billion seems like a decent peak, we don't need to aim for 20 ffs.

I think that maybe, if we turn around the elections in 26 and 28, we can restore some of what has been broken. Like, maybe even in my lifetime 🫣

I couldn't begin to say. The US isn't even pretending to be all freedom-democracy-and-all-that these days.

Well, at least Zelenskyy doesn't have to waste time preparing a new response each time. He can just resubmit the previous "No." and get on with defending Ukraine.

So, is the US Navy just going to be pirates now? I mean, I guess there is historical precedent, but it feels a little off-brand for the image we try to project.

I adore Sir Terry's Discworld. But his writing, while technically fantasy, is closer to Douglas Adams than Tolkien. Insightful social satire written into a fictional world.

I think I admired Vetch/Estarriol the most. I always feel like I am not as good a friend as I should be. I'm too likely to concentrate on my own concerns while Vetch manages to balance his own success with his love and support for his friend and family.

Where have the standards gone?! I mean, I got quality stuff, like a poster of a Ferrari, at the school book fair in the 80's. The denigration of quality educational materials is shocking.

Yowzah. That is... certainly something. I don't like to throw around terms like "crazypants" as they can be harmful to those struggling with mental health. But I am having difficulty coming up with an appropriate reaction to this crazypants word salad.

We are so used to literary heroes who are wise beyond their years. It is refreshing to see that Ged is still a boy, even with his powers, and that he grows up as the book progresses. It is a beautifully honest coming of age tale!

Nothing new under the sun! Although, I am a teacher in Savannah (the US South) so I have heard the Jello myth many, so many, times and the racism is frequently unsubtle.

Key and Peel are always reliable! I always felt that this sketch is also poking fun at the arrogance of an outsider mocking and deriding the names (and by implication, the worth) of a culture they do not understand.

Yeah. It's a problem in the genre, but I don't expect it so much in the 21st century 😞

I liked the first book a lot! The creeping sexism in the later books got on my nerves. At first I thought that the character introduced as a love interest was a joke by the author 🙄

I love how Ged is flawed, his anger and (maybe) jealousy are relatable. As the reader I know that his actions are risky, but I can understand why he takes them.
