Didn’t know that!

Plus, maybe I’m a slow reader!

lol just about ‘minimum wage’ if you spend a couple of hours per script - double that for an hour of work!

Also there are scripts you know fairly quickly are not going to meet the requirements of the brief. Do you still have a duty to read the whole thing? It depends on what’s been promised to the writers at the outset, I would say…

As long as it’s made clear to anyone submitting that their script will not be given feedback unless it goes onto a shortlist. Even then you’d need a couple of hours to read a piece that plays at anything over 90 minutes, in my opinion.

It’s a real mix. As a freelancer I’m often asked to read early draft plays as well as work that has gone through development - mostly unpaid. Reading/response time is sometimes incorporated (or assumed it will be absorbed) into fees I’m paid when working for a company to develop a specific script.

Quite often thinking of both the writer and the producing organisation but it really depends on the path the script has taken to get to you.

I personally think that if you’re going to offer open submissions then you need to commit the resources to making sure everyone has the same opportunity of consideration.

I’d find it hard, or pretty impossible, to do justice to a full length play or even a one act play and give considered feed back in just an hour. And I do a lot of play reading.
