I have real love for the societal optimism of the Space Shuttle program at that time (routine access to space, a teacher in orbit) so much more than whatever today's "Go fever" and futures-blind conditions are!

Most compelling to me is Philosophy of the Accident.

This comes from Paul Virilio's idea that every technology invents its accident. The ship invents the shipwreck, the nuclear plant invents meltdown.

Challenger becomes a meditation on how progress and catastrophe are married.

Richard Feynman's Epistemological Point: His famous appendix noted NASA estimated failure at 1 in 100,000 chance while engineers estimated closer to 1 in 100.

Two entirely different relationships with uncertainty! NASA constructED confidence narratives that diverged catastrophically from reality.

Cassandras: When alarm is raised, others reframe the question from "prove it's safe to launch" to "prove it's unsafe." Inversion, or shifting burden of proof.

Warnings threaten schedule, budget, or identity.

We systematically edit weak signals when those signals conflict with preferred momentum. Morton Thiokol saw it clearly enough to plead against launch the night before. NASA had lost its capacity to metabolize that knowledge.

Normalization of Deviance: NASA didn't fail through negligence or villainy but through a slow, incremental process where each small anomaly became the new acceptable baseline. Erosion of material happened and nothing catastrophic resulted, so it became
"normal."

I saw the film most recently at McDonald Observatory, where telescopes keep looking, and under one of the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world. The argument held. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fKB...
