Here’s my short rec for a simple (and frankly very cute) trick that has helped me (and @kennkaufman.bsky.social!) find more warblers during fall migration. 🪶https://www.audubon.org/magazine/want-find-fall-warblers-listen-chickadees
Want to Find Fall Warblers? Listen for Chickadees
The calls of these resident stalwarts serve as an alarm bell for migrating songbirds—and a helpful beacon for birders.

Opening soon: 50th annual "Birds in Art" at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, USA. The world's premier bird art show, prestigious and highly competitive. I was lucky to have a painting accepted this year (only my 4th time) and it will be among the 142 artworks on display.

I don’t fly Frontier very often (and I’m not taking them today either) but I like to look at their planes. Has anyone seen this one closely enough to tell what kind of parakeets these are supposed to be?

Today (July 14) is Bastille Day. Hmmm … what would be an appropriate way for people in the U.S. to celebrate?

Maybe several decades of Congress abrogating its power to declare war to an imperial executive wasn’t such a grand idea after all.

The US Constitution mandates that the executive branch is just one of three equal branches of government. If the president overreaches his authority, the courts and the congress have the right (and the constitutional duty) to rein him in. No Kings in USA!

Small wonders in nature can give us moments of calm even in perilous times. So here's a small day-flying moth, the Eight-spotted Forester, seeking nectar in the flowers of a Roughleaf Dogwood shrub. (Ohio, USA, June 10, 2025.)

I'd forgotten that May 31 was designated as World Parrot Day. Here's a simple portrait of a Bourke's Parrot that I painted a few months ago, in watercolor and gouache on tinted paper. Bourke's Parrot lives in Australia (one of 50-plus parrot species there) where flocks wander in the dry interior.

Impressive story about individual wasps with detailed spacial memory and ability to recall the status of multiple separate nests. phys.org/news/2025-05...
Wasp mothers have remarkable memory when it comes to feeding their young
Digger wasps make a short burrow for each egg, stocking it with food and returning a few days later to provide more. A new study reveals that mother wasps can remember the locations of up to nine sepa...

Tonight at the Biggest Week in American Birding, I was one of the judges for the bird tattoo contest. A tattoo contest at a bird festival? Sure, why not? They’ve been doing it for years, just to welcome more people into the birding community.
