It’s a pass, his arm is moving forward when possession is lost. Yeah, spiritually, it’s a fumble, but literally, it’s closer to a pass than what Demercado does; Demercado just lets go of the ball and it goes forward because of his momentum. So, if one of these is a pass, both are.

This is the exact situation Rodger is talking about: spiritually it's a fumble and a loss of possession, but he literally throws the ball into the pylon. You look at it and go "yeah, you should lose possession" but strictly speaking...it's a pass.

There was one of these in the 2021 Purdue-Iowa game where the Purdue player reaching for the goal line CLEARLY throws it forward (not even a drop it and his momentum made it go forward, he actually pushes it) and it hits the pylon. It should've been an IFP and not a fumble.

The spot of the pass. You are awarded the yards gained, but you lose the down. So, if it's an IFP, the down would count up to the point of the pass, then you lose the yardage, so it'd be 1st and Goal from the 6.
